Early game, mass snipers/grenades dominate. Focus on defense, building your base, and getting good troops at first. This generates 100-200 food to trade for useful supplies. My 2+ bases have mist repeller, 1x medical, 1x living, 1x scan and/or 1-2 research, and the rest food. 2x medical, 2x living quarters, 2x training, 1-2 engineering, scanner, access, mist repeller (late game). I convert my first base into my permanent home.
